Level 2: “Beyond Foundations”

Prerequisites

Instructor permission is required for dropping into Level 2 Beyond Foundations classes. Everyone learns at a different speed, trains at a different frequency, and comes to zouk with a different movement background - so instead of requiring a specific number of months/years of experience, our intermediate-level curriculum is based on students’ grasp of the zouk fundamentals (listed below). Some students may be comfortable with these in just a couple of months, others may require up to a year of working on these before being in a position to excel in the Beyond Foundations classes.

Leaders and followers must be clear, comfortable, and confident in executing the following in a social dance:

Foundational Zouk Techniques:

  1. Utilizing an appropriate dance frame

  2. Basic foot projection

  3. Dancing on time to the zouk beat (in a traditional zouk song)

  4. Polite (and safe!) social dance etiquette

  5. Leaders: comfort in moving while leading (not just staying in place and leading with the arms)

  6. Followers: appropriately delaying movements (not “back leading” or anticipating the lead)

Foundational Zouk Moves:

Basic Step:

Lateral:

Viradinha:

Lunge + Simple Turn:

Soltinho:

Yo-yo:

Bonus/Boomerang:

All of the above are taught in our Level 1 “Zouk Foundations” classes.

Students must receive approval from one of the AmoZouk instructors before dropping into the intermediate classes. Don’t worry, there’s no formal test, we’ll just be doing some low-pressure social dancing to make sure you can do all the above prerecs. Just ask one of the AmoZouk instructors during the practica (or any zouk social) and we’re happy to do a quick level assessment! We do not have time to do level assessments right before class, so please get permission BEFORE the day of class.

For students visiting from out of town, please shoot us a message (we may ask to see a video of your dancing) so we can pre-approve your class participation in class. Thank you!
